I need some advice on what product is the best to use for cleaning the toilet bowl. We have a purasan system and the flush/re-fill water is from the lake vs fresh water. It leaves a dirty residue in the bowl and I assume it is not okay to use cleaning products that we might use on our toilet at home. Also, should the cleaning products be compatible with the purasan chemicals?

If you'd read the directions for your PuraSan, you'd know the answer: Raritan "C.P Cleans Potties" is the only bowl cleaner that's safe for use with it. They're not just trying to sell product...it IS the only thing that won't harm the PuraSan and/or the rubber parts in your toilet.

It's an outstanding product...a non-chemical bio-enzymatic cleaner that not only destroys odor on contact, but also leaves the bowl shining without any scrubbing. Just a squirt under the rim when the bowl is wet is all it takes.

Do NOT use ANY household bowl cleaner in any marine toilet, whether it's connected to
a PuraSan or any other device or not...they all contain chemicals that are highly destructive to the rubbers parts in marine toilets and also break down hose resistance to odor permeation. For the same reasons, never use bleach, anything that contains bleach, Lysol, pine oil cleaners, ANY chemical household cleaner or any product that's petroleum based (i.e Vaseline or automotive antifreeze, among others).

Our Vacu Flush systems by Sealand do reccomend the powdered product "Bar Keepers Friend" as a safe agent to use on porcelain finishes inside and out.

You can use anything that won't scratch porcelain on a sponge/cloth/paper towel to wipe or scour the bowl, provided 99% of it is wiped away before the toilet is flushed, so it can't harm the rubber parts in toilet pumps. In fact, before we developed C.P. (part of the product line that Raritan got when they bought my company), I used Comet for years.

However, liquid household bowl cleaners should never be used because they're highly destructive to the rubber parts in toilets--some are even corrosive--sanitation hoses AND the innards in the PuraSan, Lectra/San, Electra Scan and other treatment devices.

Interesting that SeaLand recommends using Barkeepers Friend to clean their toilets  instead of their own bowl cleaner, btw. Must not work very well.

Thank you much for the very helpful feedback. We have the information on the purasan system and have read it trying to understand how it works, but the CP product must not have jumped out at me. I will definately get some.
Isn't Bar Keepers Friend like Comet or Bon Ami? I've seen it before but can't remember.

If the toilet is old, stained and all beat-up, there's a cleanser called "ZUD" that you can get in the janitorial section at Home Depot and Lowe's (it can't be used with a Purasan). But if you have a holding tank, ZUD is the stuff to use for an old rust-stained ceramic bowl. One of my customers had gout, and the uric acid in his system had just about destroyed the inside of the toilet bowl. NOTHING would get the buildup off the inside of the ceramic bowl. His wife contaced me in desperation, and I suggested ZUD. She tried it, and marveled about how well it'd worked. Unlike many other cleansers that only contain fine pumice and/or chlorine bleach, ZUD contains oxalyic acid, and it really does a good job. Again, don't use it on a head that is connected to a Purasan, but for installations that are holding-tank only, it works like magic!

It's fairly cheap, too.
