I checked out our head and it says "delta marine head, galley maid" on it.
Either way, that pump pumps water into the toilet and out of the toilet. I figured the problem with one of our toilets was the dirty water from the toilet was making its way into the clean water while the pump wasnt being used. Then when you first flush its yellow and nasty crap from the last flush. If we run it long enough it will eventually turn clear and not smell of poo. Depending on what you did the last flush(#1 or #2) will decide on just how bad it smells.
Usually I give both heads a good flushing with nothing in them before we leave to clear them out good. Now what I cant figure out is how one of the toilets was BONE dry when I went to the boat after it sat for two weeks. The other toilet was still full of water but the other was dry. Didnt smell at all though.

When we are staying on the boat for a few days, the toilet and water flushes don't get crusty and don't smell. Its when we first open the boat after its been closed up - even only after a few days. But, once we start using the facilities, there is no problem with smell or yucky water. We also flush several times before we close it up just to make sure everything is out of the hoses. And we've experienced one head having water in the bowl and the other head being dry. But they still smell. Another thing we've tried that makes no difference is putting the seat lid up when we leave. Either way the smell is still there, but if we put the seat lid down when we left, the smell is ten times worse when we open it.
We close our seacocks when we close up the boat to leave. That shouldn't make a difference should it? I don't think the previous owners closed the seacocks - ever. 'Tis still a mystery.

I wouldnt think closing the valves would cause any differences at all. Weve never closed ours since it takes 20min of crawling around under the floor to get to the pumps and Im pretty sure they dont even have valves, believe it or not.
Since you poured in clean water theres no way that the lake water has anything to do with it. Do you ever clean the inside of the toilet out?

I'm not sure what you mean by cleaning the inside of the toilet. Surprisingly, the inside of the bowl wipes clean easily and has no scratches or stains. Looks brand new. We don't use any chemicals to clean it. Just take a sponge with a little lysol sprayed on it and run it around the bowl. Before we do anything though we flush out the brown crusty water that smells. Then we take a deep breath and hold it untill the bowl is wiped clean. Truly, the smell is overwhelming. Like a sewage treatment plant smell. I am glad the smell goes away after we open it but the first few minutes are stinky!
Our seacocks are easy to get to. At least the ones we know about.

Next time we go to the boat, we're going to do the "smell" test on the hoses. And we have been flirting with the idea of using an ozone generator for a shock treeatment but the jury is still out on the pros and cons. That subject has been discussed on this forum, too. We love our boat. I know there is a resolution. And probably more than one cause!
Thanks all for adding input. Keeps me thinking onward.

It seems to me that the lake water intake hose is holding lake water and after sitting in the lines for a week begins to smell. In that case you just have to put up with it or switch to fresh water. Also, the lines are probably saturated. Try the hot rag on the hose trick to see if they are.
My procedure is to flush out as much of the lake water as possible and put a little fresh water in the bowl when I close up for the week. This empties the discharge line but not the intake. When I open up next time I flush long enough to empty the lines that have been sitting all week, pour in a little K.O. and scrub the bowl with a potty brush and then flush again. It smells for a few seconds but the K.O. neutralizes the smell pretty well.

Is it okay to use K.O. to clean the toilet bowl and then flush overboard? I thought K.O. was just for holding tanks. We have been ultra concious about putting any chemicals in the toilet that would ultimately be flushed overboard. We have the purasan system and understand how that works. What if we left a little K.O. in the bowl when we leave? Would that neutralize the smell and foul crusty water that seeps in when we're gone?

I had the same problem with dirty water after sitting for a while. This never happens while on board. I noticed it even more when temps were above 110 degrees inside the boat. I have since place a pvc gate valve inline for both heads that I close before leaving. Problem solved. You could serve dinner off those bowls now. Anyone hungry?

Yes, was talkin' to you!
Having been obsessed with things Jeep from an early age, and having owned a couple of Korean war vintage M38's several years ago, thought I'd see if you recognized where "Jeep" originated,,,,. Original army terminology was "Vehicle, General Purpose AKA, G.P. militarized to "Jeep".
While all the brands (Except my personal favorite, Vacuflush) work basically the same, there's quite a bit of difference in design. Knowing what you have will help with any problems you try to relate.
Best,

haha, ohhh. Caught me off guard, wasnt expecting to see that on this forum.
Weve not been interested in Jeeps as long as you. Got our first Jeep in 1994 which was a Grand Cherokee. Been buying Jeeps since, currently have 4 and we still have the grand from 1994!
Check my first post on this page. It say delta marine head 'galley maid' on it. Ive not seen anyone else talk about those on this forum.. Got any info on it?? I searched google a little but couldnt find much.

I have the same problem. After the boat has sat for several days, the first flush is really bad. It isn't the lake water sitting there in the input line, it is coming from the discharge line. No matter how much you flush it before you leave, there are always contaminants on the wall of the line and a certain amount of water holding in the line too.
THIS has been successful for us....before that first flush, when you get to the boat, pout 3-4 8 oz. glasses of water in the bowl and then flush it. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you take the finger off the button. No mountain, no molehill.

Head Master ducked in and out pretty quickly on you, and Peggy's never jumped in,,,. Unfortunately, the're the only ones here who actually know $hit from chinola! May need to PM, or email them . Think Peggy's address in in her signature, Head master can be reached at the marine head company he works for, you'll have to go back to past posts to find out which one.

We'll be going to the boat this weekend after having had it closed up for 2 weeks. I'll see if our preparations before closing this time made any difference. We kept the toilet lid up, no excess water in bowl and weather has been a little cooler. I like the idea of the in-line valve that EJ mentioned. The smell is not really something I want to get used to first thing we get on board! Fortunately it does not persist once we are on board and enjoying the boat.

I suggest you get the manual for your toilet before blindly
ordering parts from another source, 'cuz their toilets are
different from most others. Galley Maid's contact info is here
http://www.galleymaid.com/gpage3.html The rest of their site
doesn't offer much.

Thanks peg! Not sure why I couldnt find that website. Got some pics of the model # on the pump but its at my parents house on their camera.
Since we got the boat weve been trying to get the owners manual for everything. Were going to end up calling stardust and trying to get one from them for whatever they can give us one for.
Seems we have the DHR or DHE head..
