I found a houseboat that has a "Blackwater Treatment System" and it has standard tank type toilets installed in both heads. The owner tells me that the system works great and they have had no issues with this system. No smell, water does not splash out of the tank and bowls, etc. I can't find much information and I'm concerned the system my not function properly if not designed correctly. Does anyone have any experience or opinions with systems where tank type toilets are installed? dek

Household tank type toilets put a LOT more water per flusn in the holding tank than marine units. You either have to pump out oftener or have a tremendous holding tank.

He says it has a treatment system... maybe a Purisan?

I don't see why the system wouldn't work. As OHB says it'll use a lot of water, but if it's a "raw water" system and discharges back overboard (after treating) it may not matter.

I think a marine head would be better.

Question. How does the toilet flush tank fill? I would think a pump. What water source, raw or from your fresh water tank.

What controls the pump shut off, is it a mechanical float or a solenoid?

Then there is the flush devise. If it is a standard handle-rod to flapper, you can:

A. if raw water: the flapper can fail causing the pump to run uncontroled, with your blackwater tank filling and excess overflowing, if you have a bilge this is serious.

B. if fresh water: you would drain your fwt, at worst spill over.

For peace of mind I'd put is a good marine toilet.

Good luck.
