CaptRon Member Posts: 40 Joined: 08/08/2010	I have used several different treatment products for my black holding tanks in the past and they all seem to fail after a week or so. Has anyone tried Rid-x in their black holding tanks? I started using it a couple of months ago and it is doing a good job so far. My tanks have a good cross vent system, with a vent through the hull just above the tanks and one high just below the roof for each tank. I don't have any odor at all so far. houseboat8972 Admiral Posts: 307 Joined: 05/05/2006	I have a Type II approved system (with aerator pump) and use Rid-X and have had great results also. The "first flush smell" after being away is hardly even noticeable too.

CaptRon Member Posts: 40 Joined: 08/08/2010	I have two 100 gallon tanks and they are doing great. I treated them once after I was pumped out, with about a 1/4 cup of the powder. Then I added another 1/4 cup in about ten days. Now 30 days later, they are 75% full and it is 97 in the shade here and there isn't any odor at all. But I cleaned the tanks, by back washing, as best that I could before I tried it. CaptMark Member Posts: 174 Joined: 07/23/2007	My holding tank is outside the cabin area under the deck of our pontoon style boat. The vent is right at floor level. It's been 9 weeks we have been using the boat now and I have not pumped out once yet. Even though the temperatures have been over 90 degrees every day there is zero odor. There is only one treatment I will use -- Aqua-Kem. Our toilet is a recirculating Electra Magic model. We have gone as long as 4 weeks without dumping the waste to our holding tank with no odor problems. ------------------------- Mark 1979 Crest Brookville Lake, IN

FranticallyRelaxing Admiral Posts: 370 Joined: 09/10/2006	I was just reading the post before this one (as of now), where someone suggested how to turn the toilet water blue-- and Peggy said "bad idea" due to the household-type cleaners being bad on rubber hoses and such on our waste tanks... So, is Rid-x a potential plumbing threat? As for Aqua Kem, I like the stuff too, but the sanitary engineer who deals with the vault johns at our harbor says that is some of the nastiest stuff ever made, and don't anyone dare put any down in the vaults... ??? Ok, I don't! As for what I'm using, I went into Wally's the other day for some TS3 green (or whatever it is) and they didn't have it- but they had some 2-ounce per 40 gallon orange stuff. We 'do' about 20 gallons or so a week, and 2 ounces per week has been keeping things fine, no complaints. It is not for septic tanks however and will kill the bacteria necessary for a septic system to operate properly.
