We have a 1977 40’ Harbormaster with an Electra San System on Board. We wish to convert to holding tanks.

Our Dillema lies in the positioning and level of the holding tanks. Our options are as follows:

1)       Install Holding Tank just behind the toilet – the holding tank  would be at the same level as the toilet. Thus, as the tank gets more full the waste level would be higher than the toilet.

2)       Install a holding tank in the bedroom – over 10’ away – underneath the bed. Same problem as #1 in that the tank would be at the same level as the toilet.

3)       Cut a hole in the floor to install the tank in the bilge area. Location of Tank would still be at least 6’ feet away however the tank would be below the toilet.

#1 and #2 would require no cutting and would be the easiest to install. #3 would be a bit of a project. Any suggestions you have would be great.

Thanks.

My forward head (raw water flush) is probably close to 20' from the holding tank with no issues at all. As far as height...........as the old saying goes "two things you need to know to be a plumber, sh!$ runs down hill and pay days on Friday"

I think if you installed a vented loop near the toilet, ABOVE the level of the tank you would be safe. Once the toilet pushes the waste through the loop, it's downhill from there, and a vented loop won't siphon back. Just my opinion.

I have both. My primary holding tank of 40 gallons is below the floor and both toilet levels. When full I pump it up to a 200 gallon holding tank at floor level. The 200 gallon tank when completely full will overflow to the forward head about a inch but that is all it takes to run over. Two things I did to help with this is to install a calibrate-able level meter and calibrate it full just shy of the over flow height. The other is to install shut off valves at each head to isolate the head if needed. My forward head is a guest quarters head so most of the time it remains closed. Another suggestion would be to install your pump up macerator as close to the lower tank as possible so priming won't be an issue.
