We are attempting to plan a last minute HB trip to Lake Cumberland,
probably at the very end of the high-rate season. Does anyone
have any comments to share about the quality and cleanliness of the
various rental vendors, particularly State Dock? It is just 4
of us going, so we would be looking at the smaller boats in each
fleet. Is it worth a trip down there to look?
We're about 2 hours away.

It depends on how particular you are about the boat you rent. It sounds like it's important to you and since you're only two hours away I would definitely make the effort to drive over ahead of time. Choosing the right company could be the difference between a great vacation and a disaster.

Check out the special rate package called Kentucky Houseboating Rendezvous at State Dock Marina. We just booked up. The rate was actually the off season rate while still in season. Another great thing this package is put together with the Kentucky Dept of Tourism and tey have a lot of extras included in the package that we wouldn't get on a regular charter like free dinners and events put on by local food and beverage companies, inclusing a "Makers Mark" evening with live music out on the lake.
If you booked already maybe you can change to this special package. The savings alone are worth it.

That looks like a really nice deal. Unfortunately, the date range doesn't work with our vacation plans. I'll bet it's a blast. The site also says execs from Sumerset and Thoroughbred Houseboats will be there.
Thanks for sharing the information. Be sure to report back on how it goes!

Since I was expressing doubts, I thought I should issue an update on our trip. I wasn't able to take Dave's advice and preview the boat in advance, but we were thoroughly pleased. The HB was clean and in good shape. All the State Dock employees we dealt with were courteous, friendly, and very helpful. Cumberland was clear and beautiful (not to mention HOT). The lower lake levels didn't take a thing away from our fun. In fact, the shoreline was very interesting. During four nights in coves, only one (1) other boat came in to look around. Solitude!!
I am a wannabe HB owner. The old salts on this forum repeatedly recommend renting to figure out your needs and wants and they are right on the money. After 2 rentals, I have a clearer vision of the right boat for me.

It has been a while since I was on Lake Cumberland. We had a
lot of fun there and had rented from Burnside Marina.
No complaints about the service or the boat, everything was
top notch.

Zilpo55, what did you do with your pooch when you rented the houseboat? We have looked into renting about 3 times now and dogs are prohibited. She isn't big and she is totally housebroken, but I don't know how we would "sneak" her on. She is a must go - no exceptions! I think it is best to rent before you buy too, but we have been running into that little obstacle.

Find a rental company that accepts dogs, they are out there. Do not "sneak" her on.

I'm glad to hear there are rental companies that allow dogs on board. We even expect to pay a deposit like we do at some hotels. I don't know how we would "sneak" her on anyway. I can just hear one of the folks helping us set up ask if our duffel bag just barked! We'll keep looking.

After many years in the business nothing would surprise me. We did have a guest sneak their un-housebroken dog onto one of our boats. Luckily they only lasted one night before we ended their rental.
