Hi folks, new to the forum, and have had a 69 Nautaline 34 foot since last year on the Chain of Lakes in northern Illinois.   Great boat, but the steering is basically unusable at this point and I am looking to replace the cable and possibly the gear box as well.  It's a "worm gear" type (not hydraulic) or so I am told by my mechanic friend.
Want to know if anyone has replaced their steering cable/assembly and would share their experience with me.
It's not as fun to drive the boat without being able to steer it!  Just kidding....

Jb, I'm in the middle of changing mine over from the Teleflex "big t cable system" (which broke on my flybridge). The system which was used on my 37' Carl Craft, was only supposed to be used on boats up to 34'. I spoke to a fella at Teleflex, that gave me insite on upgrading to a hydraulic system. also stated, that it is a one piece special order cable that is non-returnable and takes 3-4 weeks to make. I'm piecing the system together on ebay , considerably cheaper than the marina I work for. He also said, the steering will be a black and white difference from what I had. If your thinking about upgrading, give Teleflex technical department a call, Don can help you figure out what you need, then you can google your best price on the part numbers. It's still a bit pricey, mine is around $2200 with my labor, but for me it'll be worth it, I looked like Ralph Cramden trying to steer the bus, on my flybridge.

I am going to assume that you have a Chrysler Marine engine with the Dana Outdrive. If correct, Marysville Marine (numerous locations) stocks parts for these and would probably have the correect length in-stock, or certainly nearby.
