We have a 1972 Crest pontoon houseboat we are just finishing up. We seem to be getting the runaround for getting adequate insurance for it.  Just got quote from BoatUS and even though I had entered 30,000 for boat. They sent back a quote for only 12,000 coverage. I've got a brand new Yamaha 90 for it and its never been uncrated as of yet which is included with with quote. As you can see 12,000 is not enough should something should happen and had a total loss. We figure we have somewhere in the low to mid 20,s in her in just materials, motor, etc. Heck by time its loaded with contents alone would be worth half the 12,000 figure. My question is there a insurance co. out there with bearable rates that would provide reasonable insurance for our boat? The book ain't going to work with this boat now. For I know according to the book it's worthless as to value. I know many of you have vintage boats how do you go about it?

Our houseboat is not vintage, but we use Progressive, too and they were great to deal with. They will probably let you know what they need to get your boat insured.

I too have found Progressive to be a competitive company in some areas.
Shopping is always the best time (& money) spent. It will let you know whether you get a "deal" (if there is such a thing with insurance) or not.
I would suggest trying your homeowner's agency. Many times I have found while not experts in the boating world, they do not want you shopping for insurance, in case you may find something less expensive.
I would also try the houseboat specialty companies that advertise in Houseboat Magazine. Specializing in this area, they should be able to point out specific areas of coverage special to watercraft.
A little more homework for you and your new floating home!

Hello Bamby - We have a 83 Crest, w/ 97 Honda 75HP 4-stroke.  It's insured through our MetLife policy for 16K, boat and 4K, outboard.  With liability and a $300. physical damage deductible, our annual cost is $274.
Glad to know of another Crest owner out there!

I'd like to thank you all for your response to my question here. Its sitting high and dry now but a least towards spring. I've got a few good suggestions to follow up on.

I have a 1979 Crest.
It has been so modified I had a lot of trouble finding anyone to insure it.

I did get a quote from American Family:
$10,000 coverage on the boat, $500 deductable --- $89 a year.

Our marina in Indiana got hit hard when Hurricane Ike blew threw. Most of the boats are on mooring buoys. 89 boats broke loose and smashed into each other. The owners are trying to deal with insurance right now. From stories I'm hearing, the insurance companys are offering far less than the actual cost to restore them. A lot of the boats they are just totalling and paying out CURRENT VALUE. This is why the quote you got only had $12,000 of coverage. If the damage was too much that's all you get.

Unfortunately, I did not insure my boat and it did sustain quite a bit of damage in that storm. The front deck roof blew off taking all of the railing on top with it. The deck roof was not stock and I have been told the insrance companies would have given me little credit toward fixing it. I was able with ingenuity and $500 to repair it.
