Can anyone tell me the reason why their appear to be no Houseboats in this general area?

I have a restored 1973 Starcraft cruiser (steel hull) that i am considering moving from Lake Wylie, SC to the coast.

I have talked to Marina owners in that area, but no one can tell me why there are no housebats there.

Maybe I am slow, but i can not figure it out.

Thanks in advance for your input

Houseboats are few and far between in our area also. I think it has a lot to do with being near open (blue) water. Everyone thinks that their boat has to be open ocean capable, even though many are not.

Houseboats seem to be traditionally lake boats, though flying over rivers in southern Alabama and Mississippi, I've noticed the banks are lined with dozens of them. Shallow draft, lots of windage, low freeboard, big windows, slow and low-powered....probably not good on open water in a storm. We get plenty of days here on the Albemarle Sound that would make one wish NOT to be caught out in a houseboat. But we're not letting the facts get in OUR way... Though far from finished, we're almost ready to go exploring a few of the backwaters and slow rivers nearby, and seems to us a houseboat will be well-suited for that. If we survive it, we'll let you know if it was a good idea. Our yacht club is planning a raft-up party in a couple of weeks, and the Commodore, his eye fixed on our expansive top deck, said, "If you don't come on your own power, we're going to TOW you out." I'm guessing if we bring the party boat, they'll bring the refreshments... and their own PFDs, as we'd surely come up short if the water cops stopped by to count.

Amelia,

I think that I have the same spirit that you guys have.

I am really not interested in the open water, but would use a smaller boat to explore the backwaters.

I really enjoy the Pamlico Sound area.

I might make it yet.
