Any Seagoing owners out there?

I've been looking at quite a few houseboats, will be my first, and I keep coming back to the Seagoing boats. I like their designs. I've found a couple of late '60s boats with fiberglass bottoms at reasonable prices, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has any advice or opinions to offer? Is there an owners' association?

Now if I could just sell my old boat.

Thanks,
Don

Hello, I am an owner of a 1977 32 foot 'glass Seagoing houseboat, I've owned it for 3 years and live aboard year - round on the upper Mississippi river. I couldnt be happier with this fine craft I call home. If I can offer any insight or info I'd be more than happy to help.

Great boats, both steel and glass. If water has not stood in them you are in great shape. i had a 1966 steel that was the same hull thickness as new, amazing. Had others that were gone due to water standing. if water stands in fiberglas Seagoings it will rot the keel just foreward od the engine compartment bulkhead.

I've never seen another fiberglass Seagoing other than my boat, and prev. owners had gutted and remodeled the interior, does anyone know of or have interior layout photos or floorplans the can share ? Thanks Pirate for the heads up about "keel rot" fortunately mine is and has been bone-dry inside.

Anyway I'm gonna be needing all of your help esp. pirate and old houseboater who have helped me thus far. I am just going to completely dive in this next week and just see what i got myself into. In front of the bulkhead eh pirate. The parts of the hull i could inspect seemed almost brand new!!! But this week will be the tell!!!

Pirate--

Thanks for the heads-up! I wasn't aware of the rotting fiberglass issue. I'll be sure to look for that.

Thanks again, and thanks to all who responded.

Does anyone know of a web site dedicated to Seagoing boats, an owners' group, etc?

Any chance of anyone having an owners manual for a 1971 seagoing?

Neil, check transom and where you can along the keel. You may have come out on top, I hope. glass boats are subject to rot osmosis. A glass boat 20 years old is like a plastic toy, it get brittle and will start to crack under pressure. That is why a good wood boat will survive where glass boats of the same type will break apart in hurricane conditions. The wood will give the glass will not, hence hull failure. These are extrema conditions and will not be encountered by many. I saw a Bertram international with the decks rotted off, it was made overseas and had cored decks. A great boat otherwise. $60,000 to repair.

My wife and I have been living on a 1969 41’ Seagoing for a year now. It’s a great boat and its 318 Chryslers run great. It probably has keel rot after reading the previous posts but still seems solid. (The engine hatches do not seal well and rain water tends to run into the bilge.) We are slowly trying to get her ship shape. The Onan needs its carb rebuilt and there is some wood rot in the walls from rain water leaking in. I would love to find a manual on this boat but I do not think its likely someone has one.
