My wife joined sepertly from her laptop. Everything seems to work
BUT. She tried to post a "hello". She could type in the subject OK,
but there was a red X in the message area & no cursor. No
letters could be typed.
What is she doing wrong, she tried several times during the
day.

This is caused by using the WYSIWYG editor. If you go to your profile, personal options, and change your Editor Type to HTML instead of WYSIWYG, you will be able to type your message.
WYSIWYG has more features but requires Java to be installed. Steve Harris gave me this info.
