Thanks for the replies about the HM 38 aft cabin. We purchase the boat last August.

We have notice an odor if the boat is kept closed up. It has a slight gas smell to it. It is not setting of the Fume detector and once the boat is opened up it's not as noticeable. But items taken off the boat definitely have the same smell.

We are replacing the fuel hoses since they are the original ones. The boatyard thinks it could be the vent hoses since they stay dry and will crack before the fuel fill hoses and the boat sits up for 6 months out of the year. There is no sign of the tanks leaking. I have two 75 gallon tanks amidships. Once is on the center line and one is on the starboard side. No easy way to get to the hose connections on the starboard tank.

Once the hoses are replaced I"m looking at renting an Ozone generator. I plan on letting in run for a week with the boat closed up and a couple of fans circulating the air.

Anybody every used one of these?

I have a unit made by flair in my boat and it does make a difference in the smell, a gas smell is something that you need to find where it is coming from . It does not matter how strong the smell is Find IT A.s.a.p.   Also just so you know your boat will never be totally smell free we have what boater refer to as boat smell in the bed cloths and our clothing. Best of luck ..

It depends on the size of the ozone unit you rent, follow the directions. I cannot imagine you would need to leave it running in a closed up boat for a week. It can create it's own permanent smell in the boat if you run it too long.

Thanks for the feedback. I have crawled all over the boat and I cannot find any evidence of a fuel leak. It's like there was a leak or spill at one time and the smell has lingered. I'm having the boat yard replace all fuel hoses form the fuel fills back to the engines including the vent lines. Once they have replaced them and they give it a clean bill of health we will rent the ozone generator and I will run it for three days then shut it off and air the boat out and check for the smell. I have a quote from Ozone Solutions in Sioux Center, IA with a money back guarantee minus shipping. I'm also installing a new fume senor system with a sensor in the engine compartment and one amidships with the fuel tanks. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

I want to share the outstanding customer service from Ozone Solutions www.ozoneapplications.com/index.html and the fantastic results we had with renting their OMZ-3400. I am not affiliated with Ozone Solutions in any way. I just want to let you know how well their products worked for us.

I did a lot of research on using Ozone for odor elimination and could only find a couple of references to using it on a boat. I contacted Ozone Solutions about using this on a boat and they assured me that the OMZ-3400 would not create ozone levels high enough to damage anything on the boat. The OMZ-3400 is for “shock treatment” not for everyday use. They also offered to refund our money (minus shipping chargers of $15 each way) if we did not notice a difference after running the unit for a week. We had had a slight gasoline smell with a lot of cover-up smells. We believe the previous owners tried to mask the odor with a lot of air fresheners throughout the boat. The level was not high enough to set off the fume detectors in the engine compartment or in the center bilge. We tracked the problem down to 20 year old fuel-fill and fuel-vent hoses.

We ran the OMZ-3400 starting on Sunday afternoon with 4 fans circulating air throughout the boat. I returned on Wednesday and turned it off and let the boat air out for two hours and the smell was completely gone. I turned the unit back on and the Marina replaced the hoses the next day. We let it run until Friday afternoon and the boat was odor free! The fuel fill hoses were causing the odor. We stayed on the boat until Sunday night and the odor had not returned.

After arranging the rental and them shipping it out we found out the marina would not have the hoses replaced when promised. I contacted Ozone Solutions and they offered to let us keep the unit an additional week at half the normal weekly rental charge. We ended up not needing the additional week but you couldn’t ask for better customer service!
