Getting Into The Why

July 2015 Industry

Getting to know some of the friendly faces out there in houseboat brokerage is a blast! Each broker dove into this niche for various reasons, but you can be sure all have the same passion that drives their work to help everyone out there enjoy this laidback and exciting lifestyle. Terry Miller from Houseboats Buy Terry reveals some of her background and funny experiences when we interviewed her to find out more about why she chose to get into houseboat brokerage.

1. How did you get into the broker business?

I talked to a marina owner about how I could help with boat sales and each time took a dozen donuts. He finally decided if he didn't let me, he was going to gain weight.

2. What's the best thing about houseboating?

Making memories for family and friends that will last a lifetime.

3. Can you share an inspiring customer story?

Last year I sold a boat to a couple who had been coming to the lake from Ohio every other weekend for years and staying in a hotel. They had a cigarette boat which they kept in a rented covered slip for the weekend at Conley Bottom Marina. They decided to go houseboat shopping with Houseboats Buy Terry and brought their granddaughter along.  They ended up purchasing a 1998 Lakeview 14x56 and did many decorating upgrades to make it their own style. The entire family was enjoying the lake every weekend and 13 months later they decided to go bigger. We sold their boat in 13 days and they were scheduled to close on their 2003 Horizon 16x75 on October 13, 2014. Now that is a memory-making year!!!

4. What marina do you keep your boat at?

Conley Bottom Marina on Lake Cumberland is where we call home. Our personal boat and the Houseboats Buy Terry office, which is a houseboat, are moored here. It is family-owned and operated and has a great atmosphere. One of my favorite parts of the marina are all the plants which the owner Charlie Denny takes great care of—they make you feel like you are in a tropical paradise.  Here is a link to one of the many photo album pages Tom has created for Charlie's flowers.

5. What's the best thing about selling houseboats for a living?

Each day when I come to work (if you can call my passion work) I get to meet new people from around the world who are hungry for answers to their questions about boating. Giving people knowledge about boating and helping them with their decision is very rewarding. No two days are alike, which makes it exciting to come to the lake!

6. What song best describes you?

That was the easiest question of all. Kenny Chesney’s song "Boats."  It says they are "vessels of freedom, harbors of healing boats."

7. Anything else you’d like to share?

I also want to say that Houseboats Buy Terry has many brokers, all with the same passion for boating. When you come to us you get a team of brokers all with the dedication and knowledge that makes buying a boat an exciting experience.
