We chatted with Warren Childers From Sunstar Yacht Sales & Brokerage to hear some of his experiences with houseboats and get his perspective on this fun and lively lifestyle. Here are some of the things he shared with us:

1. How did you get into the broker business?

I worked in new houseboat sales. Brokerage was a natural transition.

2. How long have you been in the business?

I have been in the houseboat industry for 22 years. The past 10 have been in sales and design.

3. What's the best thing about houseboating?

Two-part answer: 1) Business. Houseboats are the most versatile type of boat in the industry. If you can imagine it, you can build it. I don’t know of any other boat like this in the world. I love working on new design ideas and new options. This to me is one of the most rewarding things about the business. 2) Personally. I love spending time cruising with houseboats. I have taken my friends and family to some great locations in my 28,000 miles traveled by houseboat on the inland rivers and intra coastal waterway.

4. Can you share an inspiring customer story?

This is a hard question. I don’t think it is possible to pick one inspiring story out of the years of being in this industry. They are all special. Houseboat magazine did an article on one of the my most interesting customer stories. I sold a houseboat to a couple that took it from Sarasota Florida up to Canada and back by water. It was really fun keeping up with them as they made their trip.

Marina Jack in Sarasota, Florida.

6. What's the best thing about selling houseboats for a living?

Seeing people’s eyes light up when you find the perfect boat for them. That never gets old.

7. What song best describes you?

I’m not sure this describes me but one of my favorite songs is Jimmy Buffet, “A Pirate Looks At 40.” I did celebrate my 40th birthday this year.
