Smith Mountain Lake is a gorgeous recreational destination that made our top ten list of Best Houseboating Lakes in the US. Here are five fun things you might not have known about this jewel of southwestern Virginia.

Smith Mountain Lake was originally dammed to generate electricity and celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

The deepest point in this lake measures in at about 250 feet, with an average depth of 55 feet.

You can get in some great swimming with moderate water temperatures from May to September.

Smith Mountain Lake was in the 1991 comedy “What About Bob?”, though it had been called Lake Winnipesaukee in the movie.

If the area were subject to extreme flood conditions, the lake could reach a few feet below the Smith Mountain Dam, which is 802 feet above sea level.
