View Full Version : Bringing ocean-going vessels up the Mississippi River?

Hey guys. I'm working on a project at work and I'm hoping you can help me. Is it possible to bring a Roll On Roll Off (RORO) car carrying vessel up the Mississippi River to someplace like Memphis or middle to upper Mississippi to unload?

I've researched several places on the internet and can't find much in the ways of river depth and whatnot that would explain the physical limitations of moving a large vessel. I've seen lots of ocean-going bulk vesels on the Mississippi and barges of course.

Any resources you could offer will be greatly appreciated!

Brunswick GA is the main ro-ro port on the east coast. The port there has a minimum 36 ft depth. I have no idea if the Mississippi has that sort of depth all the way up to Memphis. My guess is - no.

Talking to our vessel carrier, the Amry Corps only guarantees 45' up to Baton Rouge on the Mississippi, so this is a no-go.
