View Full Version : Anyone with experience with a box anchor?

We previously anchored our cabin cruiser by backing up towards the shore using a bungee style rope on our forward danforth style anchor and tying off the aft end to shore. This worked pretty well most of the time unless the wind got crazy.

We have now upgraded to a 37' Gibson and we would like to have some anchoring tips. Our goal is to anchor off shore in a cove or low traffic area. The lake bottom is a mix of sand and rock. We have lost an anchor in the past and have had trouble retrieving them in the past, but at other times they won't hold at all.

We have been looking at the box anchor, but it's costly especially if it fails to hold. Anyone have any experience with the box anchor? The boat is outfitted with a forward winch.

Read this thread on how to rig an anchor so it comes loose when stuck on the bottom.
This is how we do it when anchoring on wrecks.

Watch this video on how to use an anchor ball retrieval system.
We use even if we have a Windlass, it extends the life of the windlass.
After the anchor floats to the top, use the windlass to pull in the rope.

I have quite a bit of box anchor experience. It is the only anchor i will buy. I have a 45' houseboat and use a xlarge box anchor. Kinda heavy, but hooks like no other anchor with much less rode. Also pulls up easier than any fluke I have used. An amazing anchor IMO.
