I am wondering what the keel is made of in my 86 44ft Gibson houseboat? Is it solid with no voids? Any wood to rot? I know there is wood in the stringer, but I'm not sure of the keel, water seeks the lowest level.

mine is just solid wood and yes I have seen them rot if the gelcoat gets worn off from beaching.

I installed a Keel Guard on mine, as I beached often on sand, and it took the gel coat off.
I discovered it when we hauled out for a bottom job.
I think the cost was about $800.
mine is solid wood.
