The city of St. Petersburg, Fla., is planning to enhance security at its marina and port by installing 28 surveillance cameras next year.

The Florida city's project is part of Mayor Bill Foster's effort to reduce costs by relying on technology, the St. Petersburg Times reports. The city council approved a $174,786 contract with SiteSecure Inc. earlier this week for the cameras.

The city has a roving security team that keeps an eye on the boats that dock at the port and marina. The marina, which has 662 boat slips, is the largest operated by a municipality in the state.

The cameras will focus on entry points. George Manemann, the marina supervisor, said a security guard will watch the monitors at all times, but the video stream also will be digitally recorded.

Manemann said the marina has no existing security problems. He described the cameras as an enhancement.
