Where Sun Meets Sand

November 2014 Sandra Deck

If you are looking for a quiet vacation with plenty of fall leaves, Lake Havasu is not the place for you. But if you are looking for an escape from the cold winter months in the Midwest, this Arizona hotspot is calling your name.

Lake Havasu City—which is three hours driving time from Phoenix, two hours south of Las Vegas and a four- to five-hour drive from the Los Angeles region—attracts 750,000 visitors a year thanks to its dry, desert weather, 300 plus sunny days a year and, most importantly, a boat-load of watercraft options. While it’s not a big liveaboard community, there are rental options if you want to experience Havasu on a houseboat.

Lake Havasu Houseboats

Lake Havasu Houseboats is affiliated with Nautical Inn & Resort. This means your houseboat vacation comes with all the perks of staying at a five-star resort. Once you arrive, you can park your vehicles in a secure area on the hotel property with no daily parking fees for houseboat customers. Plus the resort has a wide variety of runabout and PWC rentals and they offer a tag-along rental rate for their houseboat customers. The company offers a captain’s service for novice houseboats too. You can tell them if you are interested in a party or a private cove and their captain will drive you out to the perfect location. When your trip comes to an end, they will come back out and bring you back to the resort. This system allows for no worries, just enjoyment of wonderful Lake Havasu.

Odyssey Houseboat

Lake Havasu Houseboats is proud to own an 85-foot Odyssey, which is the largest houseboat rental on the Colorado River. This boat has four spacious stateroom areas, one of which actually includes a king-sized bed, which isn’t a common occurrence among smaller rental boats. A fully-equipped kitchen and two full heads round out this rental boat. It is also equipped with standard electronics, including TVs and a DVD player, but as the team at Lake Havasu Houseboat Rentals likes to say, you aren’t on Lake Havasu to watch TV. You're here for the vast sun canopy up top. You're here to steer from the flying bridge on the upper deck. You're here to soak up the sun while soaking in a massive hot tub or to whip down a slide into Lake Havasu's warm waters.

If an 85-foot boat is too large for your needs, the company has rental boats in almost every size down to 60 feet. These boats come with a variety of amenities including hot tubs and water slides. Each boat in the rental fleet is thoroughly outlined on its website so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting, even before leaving the comfort of your own home.

The Lake

With miles of shoreline, you can have your own secluded cove to spend your days swimming, water skiing, fishing, or just relaxing and enjoying quality time with your family and friends aboard your rental boat. For the anglers, fishing is excellent with a variety of species thriving in the lake, including largemouth bass, striped bass, blue gill and catfish. At night, after watching the spectacular desert sunsets, you and your family can sit on the upper deck and look for shooting stars.

The waters of Lake Havasu are sparkling clear and warm, making it one of the best boating lakes around and a perfect destination for Arizona fishing, swimming, and all types of water recreation. Water temperatures range from 75 to 85 degrees during much of the year, so the kids can jump right in when you arrive. Another perk is there are no size restrictions on the lake. From boaters with high-performance race boats to those with cruising pontoons and houseboats, there’s plenty of room for everyone. In addition to the Bridgewater Channel near the famed relocated London Bridge, Lake Havasu has plenty of hidden coves and beaches that are perfect places to relax for the day. If your idea of houseboating involves being more on the move, you can opt to explore the river, with its canyons, cliffs and plentiful wildlife.

For houseboaters, water levels are extremely important. Unlike many other inland bodies of water, Lake Havasu remains at a near constant water elevation that rarely varies more than 4 feet, providing boaters with ideal conditions year-round and contributing to its reputation as one of the best boating lakes around.

London Bridge

The London Bridge relocation project is an exciting Lake Havasu story. It goes back to 1958, when entrepreneur Robert McCulloch spotted Lake Havasu from the air and envisioned building a community along this magnificent shore. About 10 years later, McCulloch and town planner C.V. Wood came up with a plan to purchase the London Bridge from England and reconstruct it in Lake Havasu City as a tourist attraction. The 10-million-dollar project has created the second most popular tourist attraction in the State of Arizona, second only to the Grand Canyon.

Other Things To Do

This amazing American attraction, centrally located along 60 continuous miles of lake and river waterways, is surrounded by beautiful hiking country for those who enjoy nature walks, and powerboat, personal watercraft, kayak and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals for those who don’t. Visitors of all kinds can boat all year long while they enjoy the mild winter at this Arizona beach.

Lake Havasu has certainly developed a party reputation over the years. But this lake is also perfect for a family houseboating vacation. Start planning your next getaway now.
