"Rex Maughan is a visionary leader for the recreation and concessions industries. His companies lead the way for others, showing how business should be done to enhance recreation experiences for generations to come," said Derrick Crandall, American Recreation Coalition (ARC) President, as he announced the award.

From 1980 to 1997, Mr. Maughan served as the active volunteer Chairman of the National Park Hospitality Association, representing 660 concessioners in 132 national parks. In addition to providing leadership to a major recreation industry, he has directed a large recreation-services business operating in U.S. national parks and forests, on Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sites, and across the world. He served as a member of the ARC Board of Directors for many years and was appointed to the President's Commission on Americans Outdoors by President Reagan in 1985, where he played a leadership role in defining public/private partnerships and was an early and strong advocate for greenways.

In 2008, Mr. Maughan led efforts to produce the Outdoor Recreation Village at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona, an activity that helped define the National GO (Get Outdoors) Day initiative. Forever Resorts provided overall coordination for the Village, attracting visitors with a 75-foot luxury houseboat on display. Dozens of agencies and organizations joined in the effort and used it as a platform to announce new initiatives to connect all Americans, and especially American youth, to the nation's wonderful array of national parks and other public lands and waters. The event accelerated ongoing collaborative efforts between the private sector and public officials to reverse declining park and public recreation site attendance by enticing a younger generation of visitors. Mr. Maughan received the 2008 Get Outdoors USA! National Leadership Award for his vital support of the Outdoor Recreation Village.

Mr. Maughan has been a remarkable champion for the National Park of American Samoa in the South Pacific, where he once served as a missionary. He established the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and Preservation Foundation to restore Stevenson's 1890 island plantation home in Apia, Samoa, now a museum open to the public.

Forever Resorts is among the nation's leading houseboat manufacturers and rental operators and provides global leadership on environmental initiatives and corporate responsibility. The company's comprehensive environmental health and safety management program, Forever Earth, is reflected in operations at each property by its team members, guests and suppliers as well as through partners and public outreach. Forever Resorts uses its environmental management experiences to demonstrate ways visitors may apply its practices at home. Forever Resorts also operates Forever Earth, a 70-foot houseboat which serves as a floating water and environmental science laboratory and learning center at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, in partnership with the National Park Service, local nonprofits and area school systems.

Mr. Maughan is also a partner in Glacier Park Company, the operator of six hotels in Montana and one in Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park. Mr. Maughan was Vice President of the Del E. Webb Corporation for 13 years and developed and managed over $100 million in high-rise office buildings, shopping centers, industrial parks and other residential and commercial real estate, along with several recreational facilities.

The Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award will be presented on October 20 in Yosemite National Park as a featured event of the 2009 Park Partners Forum. The award was established in 1989 in honor of Sheldon Coleman (1901-1988), longtime Chairman of The Coleman Company and a visionary champion of outdoor recreation and conservation. Past recipients of the award include former President George H.W. Bush, National Geographic Society Chairman Gil Grosvenor, then-U.S. Senators John Breaux, Frank Murkowski and John Chafee, U.S. Representatives Jim Oberstar, Ralph Regula and Thomas Petri, former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort Chairman and CEO Dick Bass, and former Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne.
